excerpt

Keyt drew himself from me and lifted me from Dax, carrying me toward the dying fire. I couldn’t believe the emptiness was hurting more than their filling me. Every abused part of me wanted more, no needed more, like I was starving, too hungry to think.

“Our pheromones. You’ve got no defense for them, but you will have once the moon cycles, little kitten.” Keyt kissed my forehead. “Come, Dax. We need a bath.”

No defense of pheromones? I had no idea what he was talking about. The blood pumping through my veins, burning me from the inside, was getting so loud and distracting. “What have you done to me, Keyt?” Moisture blurred my vision, and a thick knot formed at the base of my throat.

“Hush, little one, you have no idea what you are, but you will soon, my love.” Keyt picked up a bar of soap off a shelf and dropped it on my belly as he carried me out the door.

1 sentence quote:

Naked-guy looked like he was studying me, tilting his head, and then his lips parted…was he panting?

3 sentence quote:

“I can’t take you like this when you have no idea.” His breathless words made no sense. His body was trembling like mine. He wanted me as much as I wanted him.

Welcome to Darkest Cravings, tell us a little bit about yourself?

Hello Darkest Cravings: ) Thank you for having me at your place…and quite the place I might add…lovely, in a dark, seductive way. It’s a pleasure to be here.

I’m Kay Dee Royal, writer of erotic romance in a few genres—paranormal, contemporary, fantasy—and I like to tap a little deeper into the darker-side of erotic romance, or maybe it’s better to say I’ve evolved into what I’m writing today.

I enjoy nature, hiking, fishing (because I like to float in a boat), RV traveling (because my husband is exclusively mine:), editing, and writing. Southwest Michigan is my home and I love experiencing seasonal changes…it totally hones in on my state of mind *LOL*

Writing adult fiction isn’t for everyone, how did you end up writing for the toughest audience?

It happened quite by accident – an aspiring author asked me to ghost write her sex scenes…which I’d never written before, but loved reading them. Once I started writing those scenes, something took over my pen, along with my mind *LOL* Extreme satisfaction and even empowerment came from that experience…and I wrote my first story in the genre I love most – Big Girls Don’t Cry Wolf (paranormal erotic romance).

Most of the intimidating parts of being an adult fiction writer is the steamy scenes, how did you overcome the “stage fright”?

As mentioned above, it seemed to come naturally…and using a pseudonym keeps me anonymous to those I don’t wish to offend. I haven’t done any face-to-face book signings, but I’ve enjoyed many virtual tours and chatting with readers and other authors. I’m actually a shy person…but virtually, well, somehow it releases those wallflower ways of thought: )

Which fictional character would you like to go on a date with? Why?

Keyt Darkly is my newest crush – no inhibitions, loyal, respectful, protective, and truly sexy and knows just how to satisfy an itchJ

Your favorite adult fiction books are?

I love Kate Douglas’ Wolves series…and my newest joy is a number of series by Alix Richards. That woman knows sensual erotic romance and her scenes sensitize many emotions…and her words, what can I say, she’s good: )

Do you think adult fiction has reached its full potential yet, or are we still in for a huge surprise?

What I do know is it has flooded the markets…but that gives everyone huge exposure…and in my opinion has gained the genre new readers. Can there really ever be enough of a good thing? *LOL* Things are changing for sure…evolving, who knows where or if it will end…all I know is that I’m riding the train until the last stop…and then I might not choose to get offJ

We all have a treasured possession, what is yours?

A husband who believes in me and supports me…but when he attempts to guide me, well…that’s a story for another day *grins* Where’s the whip??

Are your characters based on real people or did you create them from scratch?

Gosh, I like to think they are their own person…as in many different characteristics from people in my life, books I’ve read, movies I’ve watched, and ultimately parts of me too.

Do you think adult fiction helps improves relationships?

As a writer of it, I’ve come to think of it as personal therapy *LOL* But, yes, knowing more about what satisfies a man or woman is quite educational…and let’s face it, there’s a lot of kinky stuff that no one would even consider trying…unless somehow it is validated. I like to write about healthy relationships…loving relationships, and yes even kinky ones, but as long as there’s trust and respect, loyalty and authenticity, the open door seals the deal…right? Takes it right home…to the reader: )

If you have to pitch adult fiction to someone that’s too shy to read it, what would you pitch?

My pitch, “Yes, there’s sex…and maybe a lot of it, but there’s also love, stirring emotions, a story that backs and promotes the relationship. In fact, if you’re not careful, you could learn a thing or two from it…and actually enjoy the story-stars.”

What is your motto?

Wild abandon might just set your inhibitions free.

Why did you choose to write Paranormal/Fantasy?

I absolutely love reading this genre…and I enjoy making the rules for my beings/creatures.

There is a lot of biting in your novel, are you a biter yourself?

Perhaps on some level I am…in reality, I succumb.

What creature/species do you think makes the ultimate lover?

A shifter alpha who mates for life – and is aroused at all the right timesJ

What is your favorite creature/species?

Any kind of shifter…a “were” anything – love those mate-for-life alphas and all those crazy pheromones they carry around.

excerpt

Dammit to hell. I can’t even enjoy a movie.

The nighttime air bit at my skin as thoughts of him chomped at my brain. He’d polluted me like a poison that spread throughout my mind and body, seizing every thought, leaving no rest. I loved horror movies and yet I couldn’t recall a single scene. Jimmie kept glancing at me, concern etching his face all the way through the ninety-minute show.

Soon Jimmie and I walked out of the theater, my hand resting in the crook of his elbow. Bitterness raged inside, heating my face against the breeze when I saw the limo roll toward us. He found me like he always said he would, but three fucking hours late.

I knew I wasn’t Dorian’s top priority, and I’d made some progress at keeping my jealousy under control, but no woman wanted to be shoved to the side every time it was convenient for a man. I tightened my grip on Jimmie’s sleeve and pulled him along just as the driver stepped into our path. I gave the chauffeur a shotgun-glare as he motioned me to the car. “Miss Torrance, Mr. Lincoln is waiting.”

My heart skipped ten beats, I couldn’t tear my eyes away when the dark window lowered and Dorian tousled his ebony hair with his fingers. He wasn’t in his usual attire, a business suit. Tonight he presented himself in casual wear. His sharp, handsome features were expressionless.

I closed my eyes, digging deep for the strength to tell him to get lost for standing me up, but I knew the words would never make it past my lips. I was a fool to entertain the thought. One look from those black eyes sifted me like wheat. Dorian practically owned me. That man was my tempter and my savior wrapped into one.

I met him at the lowest point of my life, after my mother died of cancer. The three jobs I was working to keep my head above water and pay off her medical bills were about to do me in physically. While I was waiting tables at the country club, Dorian swooped in from out of nowhere and rescued me like an injured bird. His amazing sixth sense alerted him that life was too much for me, and he offered me a strong shoulder to cry on. The floodgates opened and I unloaded my personal problems. Dorian Lincoln promised those problems would disappear with a simple acceptance of his proposition: give him power over my body, something Bianca wouldn’t allow.

Lifting my palm to Jimmie’s cheek, I smiled. “Thanks for the movie. I’ll call you next week.”

“He’s a prick. You deserve better, Abby!” Jimmie yelled, as I eased myself inside the limo.

Dorian opened a small refrigerator under the seat, his hands cupping the base of a champagne glass. “You’ve wasted no time finding another way of entertaining yourself this evening.”

“You wasted no time in standing me up,” I scoffed.

When I left his office that afternoon, Dorian said he wanted me for some ‘quality time.’ Eight-thirty rolled around before I realized he was a no-show. The food got cold and eventually the long stemmed candles I lit for dinner burned out, along with my patience.

“Meetings...clients,” he said.

Top secret meetings and clients were always the excuse. The coldness in his voice was a sword to my heart, a reminder of my temporary ranking in his life. I held on tight to his promise of our relationship becoming more when the time was right.

His stony expression broke into a devious grin. “You look beautiful in that dress and your enthusiasm is charming. But watching you masturbate will reimburse me, Miss Torrance.”

My stomach dropped and quivered as I pressed my thighs together. He was going to punish me.

I tugged at the straps of the red shoes he’d bought me, eyeing him as he sipped from the flute and moved his gaze toward the window. Overtaken by the need to be the object of his fascination, I almost begged him to turn those onyx eyes back on me. His attention was the only thing that kept me from going under.

“Dorian, please I-”

My words were cut off with the sharp turn of his head. Relief came in a warm caress, but suspicion moved in with a lift of his brow. The small amount of light coming through the tinted windows deepened the masculine angles of his face, lending them a sternness that echoed in his voice.

“No other men. I thought I was quite clear about that when we discussed the terms of our agreement, three months ago.”

“Jimmie is just a friend.”

“Jimmie is a man. A distraction.”

“A distraction from being pissed. I don’t like being stood up.”

I sounded so offended, but I had no right. Closing my eyes I regrouped, reminding myself that I freely agreed to make myself available to him. Dorian kept up his end of the arrangement. He took care of me, changed my life for the better. My phone stopped ringing from creditors, he gave me a great job at his company, and I had food on the table in a fabulous apartment. He seemed to know my every need before I voiced them. I could push aside my hostility and take his punishment and occasional negligence.

“You are mine, all mine.” he announced.

His words, saturated with power and ownership, sustained my hungry heart. I could hold out as long as it took, accepting the way things had to be until Bianca was more emotionally stable, and Dorian could ask her for a divorce. I had waited longer on losers, lazy assholes who wouldn’t work in a pie factory. This time I had struck gold.

Reaching over, I grabbed the seat when Dorian impatiently knocked on the divider and the limo picked up speed.

Welcome to Darkest Cravings, tell us a little bit about yourself?

Thanks, Darkest Cravings, I’m thrilled to be here! I write dark erotic romance. My stories are known to contain mysterious alpha males with twists and turns that may send shivers down your spine. Injecting bits of horror into my work is something I enjoy, and I’ve also written a couple of BDSM themed stories.

Writing adult fiction isn’t for everyone, how did you end up writing for the toughest audience?

You’re exactly right, erotica is one of the hardest genres to write. I wanted a challenge, and I have read erotica/steamy romance for years. It came naturally.

Most of the intimidating parts of being an adult fiction writer is the steamy scenes, how did you overcome the “stage fright”?

Actually I didn’t have any stage fright. I picked up the pen and let it all hang out. I wanted my debut story to be an absolute scorcher...send the nuns running.

Which fictional character would you like to go on a date with? Why?

Definitely Christian Grey. Anytime a man wears a suit and buys cable ties for something besides its original, intended use... (Need I say more?)

Your favorite adult fiction books is-? Lora Leigh’s Nauti Boys Series

Do you think adult fiction have reached its full potential yet, or are we still in for a huge surprise?

No, I think this is only the beginning. Thanks to Fifty Shades, a huge spotlight was thrown on the genre and with the privacy of eReaders, it can be enjoyed anywhere.

We all have a treasured possession, what is yours?

My kids. Always.

Are your characters based on real people or did you create them from scratch?

My characters are based on a mixture of things. Some of their traits come from me. Some come from interesting people I’ve met in my life, and others come from my imagination.

Do you think adult fiction helps improves relationships?

Absolutely. Studies have shown that women who read erotica have better sex lives. I’m sure happier boy friends and husbands fall into the mix.

If you have to pitch adult fiction to someone that’s too shy to read it, what would you pitch?

I guess it would have to be Fifty Shades. E.L. James used an unintimidating way of introducing erotica/BDSM to people who had never read it, like some of my friends. I’ve read erotica for years and when I read Fifty I was shocked at how vanilla and tame it was, despite all the hype. It was a do-not-finish for me.

What is your motto?

Never give up on your dreams. When you fall, pick yourself up and dust yourself off.

You have a few steamy moments in your novel. Were they created from fantasy or is there real life experience behind it?

Some were created from fantasy, but I use my own experiences to convey to the reader how something feels emotionally and physically.

Why did you choose a virgin rather than a more experienced woman? (Or vice versa)

The female character in Conceiving Evil, Abby, is relatively inexperienced because she was raised in an ultra-devout Catholic home.

Foreplay, some say it’s just a waste of energy, others feel that it’s a must. You’re opinion?

I think it depends on what each person wants. Some don’t want an appetizer before the main course. I say, go with the flow.

What sexual position is your favorite?

Any way, as long as I’m tied up.

Have you ever used your nails and left marks?

Most certainly, a man needs to carry a few scratches.

Do you think lingerie is a must for a relationship?

No, some women don’t like lingerie or they think they don’t look good in it. I’m not totally opposed to lingerie, but it doesn’t stay on very long.

Are you a screamer or the bite it down kind of lover?

My throat is scratchy.

Have you ever participated in BDSM?

Yes

BDSM have been describe as the ultimate form of trust between two people, do you agree?

Absolutely. Trust is the foundation.

Any favorite toys?

Flogger, rope, handcuffs, gag, blindfold and anything else my husband can find.

Does pain really enhance the sexual experience?

Some people require pain for sexual gratification, but for me it isn’t required.

Who is the better Dom? Male or Female?

Well, that’s a good question. I’ve only been dominated by my husband, so I have nothing to compare to.

You’re perfect male Dom would be?

Someone who meets all of your emotional and physical needs. The full BDSM lifestyle isn’t just about sex, it goes way beyond the bedroom.

What is you’re perfect game setup?

Show my bratty side, just so he’ll punish me.

excerpt

“So. You’ve destroyed a stereotype for me. A genie who lives in a library. Different.”

“When in Rome, no?” He stirred his cup before setting down the spoon with a light clink against the saucer. “Or, I suppose it is more accurate to say when in human form. When I am Burns, I prefer here.”

“Human form.” It didn’t sound right. Who said things like that, and meant it? “Can you change into anything you want? Any shape at all?”

He stretched out his legs and cocked his head, sliding his gaze up and away. “I suppose I could. I’m getting old and set in my ways. There’s this…” He swept his hands down the line of his body.

Her eyes were unable to keep from following, not even when he lingered over his midsection. Even lounging, his shirt was tightly tucked into his beltline. No belly fat there.

He tilted his head and gave her an upper-teeth smile, nibbling gently at his lower lip. “And apparently this form is pleasing to the eye, so I wear it often. But there are others. Tiger, a favorite. Savage and regal and the colors of flames in the night. Fearsome to behold, but very useful when dealing with physical conditions in which a human form may be outmatched. Plus, I can lash my tail.”

His voice took a teasing, conspirator’s tone. “I love my tail. You’d love it too, if you saw it.”

She trained her eyes firmly upon his. No way would she give him the pleasure of checking out his tail.

Long Excerpt Chapter One

Damn, but this was a miserable city.

A miserable city, in a miserable season, with a miserable chilly dampness oppressive enough to put out the hottest of fires. If he didn’t have to be here, he’d be reclining on a low couch surrounded by silken-clad women and the open sands of the high desert.

If he didn’t have to be here, he wouldn’t be standing in a cramped parking lot in an East Coast city (really. East Coast. The very thought made him curl his lips in disdain) staring up at a balcony three floors up.

If he didn’t have to be here, he wouldn’t. But it was here, and it was close, and he wouldn’t have to put up with this permeating on-again off-again rain much longer.

The thought of it being so close made him dizzy enough to sway on his feet. Ah, well. Wearing a human form had so many limitations. Take skin, for instance. And this ridiculous human obsession with trousers.

A loud argument erupted on the balcony above, catching his attention.

Women. Of course. Emotional, volatile, dangerous, loud…sometimes, good qualities. Especially where low couches could be found.

On balconies, peppered with vulgar language…just annoying.

Still. It was here, its presence burning like a dull itch in the back of his brain. That particular sensation, too, was annoying, but after so many decades of not feeling it all, it was a good kind of annoying. One that soon would be quenched.

Forever.

Suddenly, the sensation brightened, became sharper, clearer, like the full moon sliding free of the clouds. The argument stopped.

Ah. Finally. He turned up the collar of his overcoat against the nip of a sudden breeze and tilted his head, scanning the balcony, watching. Waiting.

A young female with tousled purple hair hunched over the railing, resting on her elbows, trying to light a cigarette. Repulsive things, cigarettes. Lacked elegance. Why not a hookah, or even a slender golden pipe? This modern age was all substance. No style.

He unfocused his gaze and looked through the girl. Nothing remarkable about that female whatsoever. She had nothing to do with the object of his desire and so was of no consequence to him. He disregarded her completely.

Another figure appeared at the rail. Another female. This one seized his notice, snapping his spine ram-rod straight.

Long chestnut hair swept in waves over her shoulder, hiding her face. He zoomed in on her and almost fell flat backwards, buckling under the smacking impact upon his heart.

Her. She had it.

Suddenly, the low gray clouds burned off in a blaze of summer brilliance, so great was the feeling in his chest. Hope. Hope eclipsed centuries of despair in that single moment.

She had it!

He side-stepped the BMW behind him, wanting a better angle, wishing to see her face. So intent was he upon the other woman that he nearly missed the cigarette that sailed past his cheek to land on the car. He curled his fists, an oath on his lips. He should be used to the crude behaviors of mortals, but still, how it bristled against his insides. Obviously, they’d been raised by very different mothers.

But then woman turned, and his scowl melted from his face. Her dark eyes met his, a split-second connection that felt like the bite of an electric current. His heart tripped on a beat and he gaped.

Remarkable. This noisy, chaotic city where all was a tangle of technology and confusion and those odd diagonal streets—she stood out: a straight line, a calm constancy, the eye within the storm. He was confounded by the impression of her psyche. Unique was too commonplace a word.

A place to sit. He rubbed his mouth, staring up at her. To sit would be good right now. He didn’t want to end up on his knees, not here amidst the puddles and wet leaves.

The young girl twisted around and hopped up on the rail. Odd. The railing didn’t look wide enough to make a comfortable seat. Well. Considering her choice of hair color, he wasn’t surprised by her action. Obviously, she was a little off.

He thumbed the edge of the business card in his hand, one that bore the address and the name of the counselling center to which the balcony belonged. Of course, she was. Why else would she be visiting a therapist?

Apparently, the bird reconsidered her perch, because she disappeared in the next moment. A piercing shriek sounded, loud enough that he had to cover his ears. It only lasted a few seconds, however, followed by a few more desperate shouts.

And then there came no sound at all, except for the traffic and the sparrows making a racket in the hedges bordering the parking lot. The women and the mental itch had retreated back into the building.

He stood a few moments longer, watching the balcony, hoping for another glimpse of her. But the remarkable woman and that wonderful sensation did not return.

He brushed his fingers together and tugged his suit jacket straight. No matter. She may have that which he sought, but she did not need to come back out.

Because he was going in after it.

And this time, he was going to get it.

Welcome to Darkest Cravings, tell us a little bit about yourself?

I’m a speculative fiction writer from Pennsylvania who has a serious obsession with Darjeeling tea, Bollywood, and shiny things. I practice Tai Chi and am seriously concerned that my sensei is going to have me go through Adrenaline Training. I don’t want to fight the Bulletman!

Writing adult fiction isn’t for everyone, how did you end up writing for the toughest audience?

I never thought of it that way—I think writing for younger audiences is infinitely harder because, as my teen daughter says, I need to learn my boundaries. And, as my husband says, I need filters between brain and mouth/keyboard.

I enjoy writing for adults because I think so much of what we do and think as adults comes from experience of living. I’m not sure I can strip all that away and write without all that experience coloring every word I set down. It’s just who I am.

Most of the intimidating parts of being an adult fiction writer is the steamy scenes, how did you overcome the “stage fright”?

I’m not sure I ever will! But that’s the thrill of it. It never gets old, does it?

Which fictional character would you like to go on a date with? Why?

John Thornton from Elizabeth Gaskill’s “North and South”, but only if Richard Armitage played him again. I’m totally down for and afternoon tea and a lovely ball afterwards. Quiet, reserved, an absolute force of strength and will. I find the nineteenth century romantic in its modesty and decorum and propriety, just as I love historical romance in Bollywood films. I am a very cerebral romantic, so the verbal and visual courting is truly important to me if physical romance is to follow.

Do you think adult fiction have reached its full potential yet, or are we still in for a huge surprise?

There is always room for a surprise. Adult fiction is continually evolving, because people continually grow and change and react in new ways to the world around us. Books will always do their best to keep up with us, and we’re nowhere close to our peaks.

We all have a treasured possession, what is yours?

My grandfather’s big roll top desk.

I grew up sitting at this desk, peeking in all the slots and drawers, trying unsuccessfully to open the cash drawer (which had a finger-operated combination lock.) It was only last year that I was finally able to move it into my home from where it’d sat in Pop’s cellar since the 1940’s. I hugged it and cried when the movers brought it in…it still looked the same, felt the same, even smelled the same.

I don’t get a lot of writing done at that desk, because I’m so distracted. It makes me feel like a kid again, and all I want to do is play!

Are your characters based on real people or did you create them from scratch?

Some characters have been inspired by real people, although I would never tell them so. The ones I create from scratch evolve all on their own, and eventually real people begin to exhibit the characters’ traits.

That always earns me an odd look—when I say things like, “You remind me of this guy I once wrote.”

Do you think adult fiction helps improves relationships?

It believe it has the potential to do it. Since romance literature describes the issues that separate a couple as well as bring them together, a reader has an opportunity to identify with the couple and the issues at hand. The best part about romance literature is that it is so diverse—every kind of couple in every kind of situation. The opportunities are boundless.

If you have to pitch adult fiction to someone that’s too shy to read it, what would you pitch?

Are they too shy to read it, or too sky to own up to it? *grin* Remember the days before ebooks when sky readers would disguise books with other covers so they can read without getting those looks? (You know the looks that I mean…the ones that precede the clucking of a disapproving tongue.) Ebooks mean that readers can enjoy anything they want, without nosy judgement from others.

But if someone was hesitant to read my books out of shyness, I’d be sure to tell them that, while there is a steamy scene or two, I don’t write explicitly. More importantly, though, one or two steamy scenes are just a tiny aspect of the story—WORDS THAT BIND is full of magic and fantasy, of human relationships, of trials and sacrifice…the story has so much more to offer than just “naughty bits”. The focus is on the personal growth of the characters and the emotional depth of their relationship, with a plot of mystery, magic, and suspense.

What’s to be shy about?

What is your motto?

Persevere. All good things are worth the fight to claim and keep.

Why did you choose to write Paranormal/Fantasy?

I was a paranormal kind of girl all my life. Writing in the wonderful spectrum of speculative fiction satisfies all my cravings—fantasy, horror, even science fiction. I also have written short stories and pages upon pages of poetry of every kind of speculative fiction, so I don’t feel limited by and rules or conventions when I daydream or when I write.

What creature/species do you think makes the ultimate lover?

You know, up until this point, I was strictly Team Vampire Boyfriend. However, writing WORDS THAT BIND have led me to a deeper appreciation of the benefits a genie has to offer. *big smile* Broad shoulders, trim waists, and lots of hot-weather outfits, coupled with searing intensity and smoldering glances. I’m sure a genie could make any woman happy.

What creature/species is your favorite?

Vamp, all the way, with a special affection for demivamps.

Book Description:

After the meteorite wiped out civilization and most of the population, it took thirty years to scrabble together rudiments of society again. Sex is the main currency, for those who haven’t mutated special abilities.

Bethany, a Tech, is able to channel electricity through her body and charge up electronics. When she saves a Shifter girl about to be sold at auction, the girl’s brother, Lucas, offers to repay the debt with his body. While Bethany would love to have Lucas at her beck and call, she’d rather have sex with someone who wanted her as a partner instead of an obligation. But unable to resist the sexy Shifter, she agrees to his terms.

When an opportunity presents itself to travel cross the ravaged countryside to loot the remains of California, Bethany believes this is the best chance for her to find her own brother, a rogue Shifter on the run for a crime he didn’t commit. Lucas wants to go, too, to free his Shifter pack.

The caravan members are expected to provide sexual services to the owners in exchange for passage out and back. As the lines between pleasure and payment become blurred, Bethany struggles to remain human while the pull of the energy feels good enough to leave her meat sack body behind. Can Lucas learn to ground her against the shifting currents?

excerpt

Bethany Macgregor searched the airwaves until she found a funeral dirge that was used hundreds of years before the meteorite hit. She let the heavy organ music wash over her through her tiny headphones. Keith was getting married today. Leaning against the wooden post, she felt the crisp air like a sympathetic caress on her face and neck. She focused on the livestock being sold in the pen across from her and let the smell of nature take her mind off her loneliness.

“Shouldn’t you be over at the looters’ tents?” Maya, her tribe’s chief, walked up to her and put a hand on her shoulder.

Bethany tried not to flinch, and Maya removed her hand. Bethany sighed, popped out an earbud for politeness’ sake. “I did a quick walk by. There’s nothing that can’t wait until the last day of conclave when the prices drop because the dealer doesn’t want to pack it up for the long schlep back home.” And because the silence was starting to get awkward, Bethany added, “Shouldn’t you be attending some back-slapping meeting in the main cabin?” Or having a “massage” in your cabin with someone who wanted a favor?

Maya snorted. “Backstabbing, you mean. No, we’re on our morning break. And I decided to breathe in the fresh smell of horse manure to clear my lungs.”

Bethany managed a wry smile. Maya was fifty years old and the oldest one in their tribe on the bluff. She had been twenty-one when the meteorite hit the world and knocked everyone back to the Jurassic period. Well, probably better than the Jurassic period. Then, all the dinosaurs had died whereas this time a few tough humans and animals survived. And of course the cockroaches, but Bethany hadn’t seen one of those since she left the part of Florida that was still above water to go up north where the Tech was strongest. Maya had gathered together the Bluff tribe with a shrewd sense of purpose and snapped Bethany up as soon as she entered the territory.

“Keith’s doing a good thing. We need another potter since we lost Angie to the Three Rivers tribe last year,” Maya said.

Bethany nodded. It was important to have the right mixture of artisans, farmers, and tradesmen to survive in today’s world.

“Lem has volunteered to share your bed, if you’re interested.”

Bethany’s stomach curled. Lem had already made that offer, and it was apparent he was only doing what Maya told him to do. Trying to keep the anger out of her voice, Bethany said, “I’m not going to switch tribes over Keith’s marriage. The Bluffs are my home. You can tell Lem he’s off the hook.”

“It’s not like that,” Maya said but cut off when Bethany turned away and put the earbud back in.

The wind picked up a bit, and stray bits of energy lit up the portable media player in her hand. Pain jabbed into her temple, like a screwdriver had been jammed into it. Bethany exhaled through the agony that turned her vision red, and pressed the center button on the device. Maya watched fascinated, as always, when the menu came up, and Bethany scrolled down to Alanis Morrisette’s “You Oughta Know.”

“Just don’t go flaunting that Tech. You don’t have to be willing if another tribe gets it in their mind to snatch you from us.”

Bethany just turned the music up loud to match the pounding in her head that channeling the energy to run the device gave her. Maya went away after one last longing look at the portable media player. Letting the angry song fill her, Bethany rolled her neck to get the kinks out of it and sat down with her eyes closed, helping her body deal with the intensity of pulling in the energy. If she had done it gradually, the pain wouldn’t have been that wretched, but she didn’t want easy or slow. The pain was cleansing, wiping away a little of the self-pity she was feeling. When the song was over, Bethany let the energy go with a sigh and a silent thanks. Getting up, she felt eyes on her, and she looked around. The tribes were socializing, chattering happily about the things they were going to trade.

She lovingly put the portable media player back into her pocket. She had traded a looter her ham radio setup for it. Bethany didn’t like hearing all the voices crying out in the darkness. Although on cold, lonely nights it was a comfort to realize the world was still going on and her tribe wasn’t the last people on Earth. Most of California and Florida had sunk into the oceans. Mount St. Helens and all of the Alaskan volcanoes had erupted, adding to the chaos. In a second after the meteor hit in Russia, worldwide communications dropped. If Europe was even still there, no one on this side of the Atlantic knew. There hadn’t been any contact outside the United States for the past thirty years. There were rumors, but nothing verified. And in the interim, strange and different creatures evolved. Bethany was one of them.

“You look lovely.”

Bethany glanced up at Keith’s voice, but he wasn’t talking to her. She watched her ex-lover, tall and handsome in a rough-and-ready sort of way, lean down and kiss his almost-bride on the cheek. They were strolling around the market, hand in hand, not a care in the world.

Darting into a tent, Bethany clenched her teeth as sharp jealousy drilled into her. It didn’t have the purity of the energy pull. It was aching like a bad tooth. She willed herself not to cry. It should have just been a marriage of convenience. A way to bring the River tribe and the Bluff tribe together. Keith had told her so. In bed. Several times. It didn’t look like it was convenient. In fact, it looked a lot like love. Bethany listened to the vendor’s spiel since he was kind enough not to notice her bright eyes or quivering lips. She was so grateful for the time it gave her to pull it together that she wound up trading a set of charged batteries for one of his canteens filled with a sweet honey mead before leaving his tent.

Blinking the tears away, she pretended they were from looking up at the sun that was muted from the ash still in the atmosphere. A flutter of wings caught her eye. A brown eagle perched on the tree next to her. It looked at her like she was a mouse. Intelligent yellow eyes regarded her intently. It was a magnificent bird, beautiful feathers and a regal look. Big too, she saw as it spread its wings and folded them back to preen. Bethany bowed her head, feeling ridiculous at her awe of the noble bird who continued to survive in such a desolate world. It would have been born amid the chaos, like she had been.

Today wasn’t the first time she had seen it. Or at least one that looked just like it. Up on the bluffs, she’d sensed eyes on her and looked around only to see an eagle observing silently. She had gotten used to it, tried to tempt it closer with bits of meat, but it disdained her attempts at domestication. Still, when she walked in the woods, the bird wasn’t ever far. Not for the first time, Bethany wondered if it was a Shifter. She had given it plenty of time to shift in front of her, often dillydallying in the brush far from camp, hoping the bird would transform.

The truth was she had been lonely even when she and Keith were together. The tribe needed her, wanted the Tech she could provide. But they never fully accepted her because she wasn’t normal. Dinners were a stilted affair, and social events strained, so Bethany learned just to avoid them. Walking alone in the woods, she pretended the animals in the woods were companions, like she had done when she was a little girl. It was a game her brother, Daniel, had taught her, before he went feral and killed all those people.

“I’ve got to stop this, or I’ll be a sniveling wreck,” she told the bird, but the eagle wasn’t looking at her. She followed its inscrutable golden eyes to the next animal up for auction.

Welcome to Darkest Cravings, tell us a little bit about yourself?

Hi, I’m Lissa Trevor. I have crazy ideas. Some are sexy. Some are funny. Some are weird – like really, really, weird. And sometimes I get bad ideas. Those are the most fun.

Writing adult fiction isn’t for everyone, how did you end up writing for the toughest audience?

I tried not to. But depending on the story, it’s where my writing leads me.

Most of the intimidating parts of being an adult fiction writer is the steamy scenes, how did you overcome the “stage fright”?

Well, I don’t think about what my mother will think when she reads it, that’s for sure. I kind of get in the zone and go with the flow. I picture it in my head like a movie.

Which fictional character would you like to go on a date with? Why?

Tony Stark. Because he’s a billionaire playboy and he’s Ironman. I want to try on the suit.

Your favorite adult fiction books is-?

Undercover by Lauren Dane. That was the book that inspired me to write erotica.

Do you think adult fiction have reached its full potential yet, or are we still in for a huge surprise?

I think there will always be surprises.

We all have a treasured possession, what is yours?

My wedding ring.

Are your characters based on real people or did you create them from scratch?

Scratch

Do you think adult fiction helps improves relationships?

Yes, I think it opens up dialogue and takes away the fear factor for new experiences.

If you have to pitch adult fiction to someone that’s too shy to read it, what would you pitch?

It’s a good story. You can always skip over the parts that you don’t like.

What is your motto?

To each their own.

You have a few steamy moments in your novel. Were they created from fantasy or is there real life experience behind it?

Fantasy.

Why did you choose a virgin rather than a more experienced woman? (Or vice versa)

Most women Bethany’s age are experienced. Besides, with barter and trade being how commerce functions now and sex being the most common currency, it would be very difficult to find an adult who is still a virgin.

Foreplay, some say it’s just a waste of energy, others feel that it’s a must. You’re opinion?

It’s a must, unless you’re going to buy stock in lube.

What sexual position is your favorite?

Kshobaka

Have you ever used your nails and left marks?

Yes.

Do you think lingerie is a must for a relationship?

No

Are you a screamer or the bite it down kind of lover?

Both

Why did you choose to write Paranormal/Fantasy?

I like the mystery of the paranormal and the different elements that fantasy bring to a love story.

What creature/species do you think makes the ultimate lover?

Probably the shifter because they’re more in touch with their baser, animal desires.

What creature/species if you’re favorite?

I’m a big vampire fan.

Welcome to Darkest Cravings, tell us a little bit about yourself?

I'm an author living in Seattle, Washington. When I'm not writing, I'm a homemaker and reader.

Writing adult fiction isn’t for everyone, how did you end up writing for the toughest audience?

I wrote what I like reading the most and people encouraged me to keep going, so I'll be doing that for the foreseeable future! :)

Most of the intimidating parts of being an adult fiction writer is the steamy scenes, how did you overcome the “stage fright”?

I never really had stage fright. Most of my issues come with making sure the scenes are balanced between fantastic and realistic.

Which fictional character would you like to go on a date with? Why?

My main character would be great. Dylan's a catch and mysterious enough to where I'd be asking for more.

Your favorite adult fiction books is-?

The entire Falling series by Jasinda Wilder. Those are some of my favorites.

Do you think adult fiction have reached its full potential yet, or are we still in for a huge surprise?

I think there is always something new to look forward to in the world of literature. There are only a few groundbreakers on the market at a time, but there will always be new writers mixing things up.

We all have a treasured possession, what is yours?

My computer. That's where I do all my writing and planning.

Are your characters based on real people or did you create them from scratch?

I created them from scratch, but I did use visual references. Danica's appearance is based on the actress Monica Bellucci.

Do you think adult fiction helps improves relationships?

I think it should be treated as its own entity. Real relationships should never be modeled off of literary relationships. There's a reason they call it fantasy. Real life relationships are about endurance, understanding and patience. Fantasy relationships are usually about satisfying passionate impulse and coming together. Real life deals with what comes after the initial passionate explosion.

If you have to pitch adult fiction to someone that’s too shy to read it, what would you pitch?

I'd tell them to open up to the possibility that they may discover something about themselves that they weren't previously aware of. Sometimes if you have an unwilling partner or someone who doesn't want to experiment, you can indulge in your fantasies through the characters. That becomes valuable when working out your own feelings and urges.

What is your motto?

I don't really have one. I think every day requires a new mantra. To set sights on one motto might reduce your chances of discovering a new one the next day.

You have a few steamy moments in your novel. Were they created from fantasy or is there real life experience behind it?

There were some instances taken from real life.

Why did you choose a virgin rather than a more experienced woman? (Or vice versa)

Valerie isn't a virgin, but she's not very experienced either. She's been too busy with work to date, and meeting Dylan kind of wakes her sexual side up.

Foreplay, some say it’s just a waste of energy, others feel that it’s a must. You’re opinion?

Foreplay is a must. I'm not much for receiving, but I love giving.

What sexual position is your favorite?

The one where the guy is trussed up like a holiday ham, licking my boot. Hahaha.

Have you ever used your nails and left marks?

I haven't left marks with my nails.

Do you think lingerie is a must for a relationship?

No. Men and women alike are just as sexy completely naked.

Are you a screamer or the bite it down kind of lover?

Screamer

Have you ever participated in BDSM?

Yes.

BDSM have been describe as the ultimate form of trust between two people, do you agree?

Yup

Any favorite toys?

Masks, floggers, whips, cuffs, chastity devices, clips, electro-shock equipment, racks, leashes, clothes pins, inflatable dildos.

Does pain really enhance the sexual experience?

I'm a masochist not a sadist. I enjoy inflicting pain versus feeling pain.

Who is the better Dom? Male or Female?

I read both. In real life I prefer to be in charge.

You’re perfect male Dom would be?

He'd have to be a HELL of a strong male to be able to overpower me effectively. He'd have to have a lot of power and bearing to be able to pull it off. I haven't met one that could do the job yet...

You’re perfect female Dom would be?

The current female main character I'm writing in one of my upcoming novels. ;)

What is you’re perfect game setup?

I'd like to dominate more than one person at a time, possibly an instructional session with another married couple.

Annie Nicholas

Genre: Paranormal Romance

Date of Publication: August 11, 2014

Word Count: 50,000 word

Cover Artist: Kanax

Book Description:

Pia Blyton, a succubus, isn’t ready for an official engagement since her skillset consists of setting kitchens on fire, singing at vampire hellholes, and most embarrassingly, she recently passed out in bed while feeding Valerio Hunan, the most eligible incubus in Lake City. Yet somehow he turns a blind eye to all her faults and still wants to set his marriage tattoos on her wrists.

The compulsion to have sex forces their people to have unconventional relationships. Every three days, she has to orgasm creating energy to survive. She can’t even live off bad sex. Unlike her, Val can’t feed off just anyone. He consumes the energy only a succubus creates and his hunger isn’t on a clock. Most incubi feed legally by luring multiple succubi into marriage with money and power. Val had caught Pia by the heart strings. Sneaky bastard.

When his food supply suddenly stops, he’s faced with starvation. Despite Pia’s adoration, she’s not an all you can eat buffet. He would suck her dry of all her life force within days. In order to save her, Val forces her to leave. With nowhere to go, Pia ends up at the last place she wants to be—her parent’s home, with nothing but her pink suitcase and a list of all her failures.

Pia needs to pull on her big girl panties and figure out why Val’s energy supplies have stopped arriving before he kills some unsuspecting succubus. But the demon inside Val is closer to the surface than either of them realize. When Pia leaves, the only thing on its mind is tracking her down and dragging her back into its bed where she belongs...even if it kills her.

excerpt

John snatched my offending finger and kissed the tip. “You were worried?” A shy smile tugged at his lips. No fair.

I yanked my hand out of his grasp. “Of course I was. It’s not like I have suitors waiting in line.” My excuse for worrying sounded thin but I didn’t want to give John the wrong impression. Caring about my suitors was dangerous and falling in love against the rules. Emotional detachment had to be maintained to protect my fragile heart and to ensure my relationship with Val would work. For an incubus, he was oddly very possessive.

“You could have anyone you wanted. You just don’t—”

“Want to.” I finished the old argument between us.

“So.” He stared at his shoes. “You met my brother.”

“Yeah, I did. He wants to suck my soul out of my body like a juice box.” I set my hands on my hips and gazed out at my parent’s wooded property. Val was wandering out there under the bare branches. Somewhere.

“Sounds like Amel.” He twisted and followed my gaze. “Did he come looking for me here?”

“No, I used the locket you gave me last Winter Solstice.” I scowled and leaned closer so he couldn’t escape my glare. “You didn’t tell me that wasn’t your name.” When pressed the locket would say something and it turned out to be his brother’s name.

His shy smile became a grin. “I didn’t say it was either.” The dumbass’ smile faded. “Wait. You tried to summon me using that name?”

“Yeah.”

“Oh…”

“Yeah.” Instead of my sweet John appearing in the pentagram, his pissed off big bro showed up and let’s just say he wasn’t happy about it.

“The city is still intact. Did your father defeat him?”

My eyebrows shot up. Dad? Beat a Mazzikim demon? “No.” John feared my father like no one else. That he stood on our doorstep showed how much he wanted my forgiveness. But Dad wasn’t a warrior. Zur-Sin, my vampire suitor and co-ruler of Lake City, however was not only a warrior he also practiced black magic.

“How exactly are you still alive?” His whispered question took me by surprise.

“Sin blood bound him.”

The blood drained from John’s face.

Reflexively, I reached out and steadied him. “John, where have you been?”

“Yes, John, where have you been?” Val strolled around the corner of the house, hands in pockets, and looking quite warm in just a suit. Incubus powers?

I jumped at his voice, an undeserved wave of guilt crashing over me as I released my hold of John’s elbow. Our people didn’t practice love. They saw the emotion as a weakness and I could see their point. Falling in love with a human had almost killed me a few years ago. Sex equaled food for my people and fidelity couldn’t be part of the equation.

My parents managed to have a beautiful four-way loving relationship. Well, until now, with a fourth wife on the horizon. After being raised in such an environment why wouldn’t I crave to have the same? I smiled at Val and held out my hand.

He was willing to give me everything, even his heart, but unlike me he’d been raised in a cold, sterile traditional succubus household. He wanted to love me, he just didn’t know how.

When our hands touched, I half expected to see sparks of desire dance between our fingers. I met his pale blue stare and my stomach fluttered. Would he ever stop affecting me this way? “John, this is Val, my fiancé.” Valerio Hunan had recently moved to Lake City. After a whirlwind courtship over a few days, I agreed to an engagement. My stomach rolled as I recalled why he’d dragged me here today. He wanted my mothers to force me to pick a date so we could publically announce our families uniting.

We had only been living together for a few weeks. In a hotel room no less. His wives hated me. What was the rush?

“Fiancé? I thought you didn’t want to ever get married, Pia.” John’s gaze traveled from Val to me and back again.

“I’m beginning to believe the same thing.” Val murmured under his breath.

I could kick John where the sun didn’t shine. “Shut up. A lot’s changed since you left me high and dry on my day three. So why don’t you answer my question before I ask Val to drag your scrawny ass to your big brother.”

Welcome to Darkest Cravings, tell us a little bit about yourself?

Hello, thanks for hosting me. Let’s see, I live in Vermont but I’m originally from Montreal, Canada. I have two growing boys that keep me busy and I also work as a recovery room nurse. For an encore, I like to garden and make jam. *bows*

Writing adult fiction isn’t for everyone, how did you end up writing for the toughest audience?

It’s what I read! I’ve dabbled in writing other genres but it didn’t hold my attention. For the amount of time I have to put in to finish a book and the sacrifices I make to find this time, I have to love it.

Most of the intimidating parts of being an adult fiction writer is the steamy scenes, how did you overcome the “stage fright”?

Lots of blushing. Lots of research. I read many articles on the art of writing erotic. Then I dived in and let a few close writer friends critique the book. It was hard. It was worse when I found out my mother read it. There wasn’t a hole deep enough for me to hide in. LOL I’m over that now. Most of the women in my family read my books.

Which fictional character would you like to go on a date with? Why?

And survive? Umm…I’d choose Dresden from the Dresden Files. If survival was ensured, then Dmitri the vampire in Nalini Singh’s Archangel series.

Your favorite adult fiction books is-?

There are so many. OMG, some people will roll their eyes at me but I still like LKH. She writes good sex and I still think Jean Claude is hot.

Do you think adult fiction have reached its full potential yet, or are we still in for a huge surprise?

I’m the worst person to ask this because I’m still considered naïve by most of my adult fiction writers. LOL I think there’s plenty of room to grow. It really has gone main stream yet in my opinion.

We all have a treasured possession, what is yours?

I have box that contains the first outfits my babies wore home.

Are your characters based on real people or did you create them from scratch?

Created from scratch. My characters live inside my head for a long time before they reach paper.

Do you think adult fiction helps improves relationships?

I think it does. There’s stuff to be learned between the pages. Sometimes it’s hard to voice your fantasies and easier to have them read the pages.

If you have to pitch adult fiction to someone that’s too shy to read it, what would you pitch?

In all honesty, I’d tell them to read my book Bait. It’s the tamer of my books and it’s free so they don’t have to feel like they’ve wasted money on something they’re not sure about.

What is your motto?

Cover all your bases.

You have a few steamy moments in your novel. Were they created from fantasy or is there real life experience behind it?

Totally fantasy, especially since I write lots of vampires, though I will admit to hubby biting me once and him getting smacked up the back of the head.

Why did you choose a virgin rather than a more experienced woman? (Or vice versa)

I choose a more experienced girl because she’s a succubus. She would have lost her virginity as a teen and I don’t that. LOL I think by making Pia experienced in sex helps to focus the reader on her emotional growth. Sex to Pia is like stopping to have a burger, but love is the star just out of her reach.

Foreplay, some say it’s just a waste of energy, others feel that it’s a must. You’re opinion?

A total must. I’d rather read a book filled with well written sexual tension then just banging against the wall. I’d prefer both, but if I had to choose I’d pick the foreplay.

What sexual position is your favorite?

To write? I like odd places and control plays. I’m not as flexible as I used to be so I like to make my characters’ muscles burn.

Have you ever used your nails and left marks?

My nails are usually short so sadly no.

Do you think lingerie is a must for a relationship?

I think lingerie is a waste of money. My pocket book cries every time I read some alpha male ripping off the heroine’s panties. LOL

Are you a screamer or the bite it down kind of lover?

Screamer, to my neighbors horror.

Why did you choose to write Paranormal/Fantasy?

It choose me. PNR is the genre I mainly read.

There is a lot of biting in your novel, are you a biter yourself?

Nope and I don’t like being bitten. Go figure.

What creature/species do you think makes the ultimate lover?

Hands down an incubus. Like my incubus, Valerio, whispered in Pia’s ear, “Baby, I’m an incubus. I don’t need toys.”

What creature/species if you’re favorite?

I have to pick?!? I’d say a vampire. Not the sparkly, forlorn kind either. I like them badass and on the scary side. (I’m looking at you, Zur-Sin.)
